photo8Prepackaged take-out salads have got to be one of the biggest rip-offs in the entire food universe.

The greens are subpar and use of  “filler” greens, like the thick, whiteish base of romaine leaves,  is rampant. The best bits of the toppings are displayed front and center … the rest woefully bare. The tomatoes are always dismal, the protein generally bland. All this for $7-$12. Take-out.

My riff on a salad Nicoise cost a fraction as much and was significantly more substantial and delicious. The hardest part? Boiling eggs and potatoes. Yawn.
